Chapter 5
They say home is where the heart is, and where the love is built. A person’s journey to their home makes it more valuable and almost like a treasure. But building a home doesn’t take a day, it takes a lifetime. And it all begins with that first second, the first moment.
I had taken up residence at Christina’s for a while. But once I felt ready I made a move that not even I knew I could. I rented out the house next to Christina and I was going to turn it into our home.
I sat in the carcass of a house that I now had to call home. I was raised in a mansion, remanded in a decaying apartment and now I was here. In a house that had two bedrooms, two bathrooms a kitchen and a living room. It was open and spaced so when the sunlight shone in it danced around the open space. It was a big step up from the roach infested cave that I was in a week ago.
Sure I was alone and but I had plenty of things to do in the house to keep me occupied. Tony had just left for training camp, the next time I would see him he would be a soldier and would probably be in his uniform.
I was alone in this venture, especially since I used some of our savings to rent this house. Tony didn’t know about this yet but I had a couple of months before he came home. I felt a little kick from the alien, my other way of getting Tony on my side. I was hoping he would be too goo-goo gaa-gaa about his son or daughter that he wouldn’t care where we lived or the money that I used.
The other upside about our new place was that Ricky, Christina and their kids were right next door. Ricky had left with Tony for the army so Christina and I had each other to depend on.
I heard a knock on the door and I knew it was her. She let herself in before I could get up from the floor. We were going to pick up a few things for the house and obviously I had to pinch the money from our savings.
“You better be cute.” I spoke to my belly.
“What?” Christina stood over me confused. “Don’t tell me you are talking to the baby again. I know those baby books say that it’s normal, but I think it’s just crazy.”
“Why? I think it’s only crazy when you talk to your belly knowing that there isn’t a baby in there.”
I lifted my arm up waiting for her to take it and drag me to my feet. Movement was a luxury for me now. I was six and a half months pregnant and looked like I was about to blow. My ankles were swelling up like they had been filled up with baking soda and popped in the oven. And don’t get me started on my back.
